Permits & Certification for Additions, Sheds, Pools & Outdoor Structures
I’m a bit lost when it comes to permits for outdoor projects. Last year we added a small deck at the back of our house and it turned into a bigger headache than expected because the council said part of it required approval I hadn’t even thought about. Now I’m planning to put up a shed and maybe a small pool in the garden, but I really don’t want to repeat the same mistake. Has anyone here gone through the process recently, especially in Victoria? How strict are they about these things?

I ran into a very similar issue a while back when I built a pool fence and then later a small studio in the backyard. What I learned is that it really depends on what you’re building, the dimensions, and sometimes even the materials. For example, my shed was under a certain size and didn’t need full building approval, but as soon as I added plumbing, it crossed into another category and triggered a whole set of requirements. Councils can also differ a bit in how they interpret things, so it’s worth checking carefully. One resource I found super useful when I was figuring it all out is this site: https://obavic.com.au/. It breaks down the types of structures—sheds, additions, pools, etc.—and explains what sort of permits or certification might be needed. It gave me a better sense of where the gray areas are and what to ask the building surveyor. Honestly, I’d recommend over-checking rather than assuming, because in my case, not doing so cost me extra time and fees.
