Planning Backyard Landscaping What Should I Prioritize First?

I’m finally ready to improve my backyard this year, but I’m not sure where to begin. Right now it’s mostly grass with a few uneven spots, and I’d like to add some planting beds, maybe a small patio, and better drainage since water tends to collect near the house after heavy rain.

For homeowners who’ve done major yard upgrades what did you tackle first? Grading and drainage, hardscaping like walkways or patios, or planting trees and shrubs? I want to make sure things are done in the right order so I’m not redoing work later.

I’m also trying to balance looks with long-term maintenance. Are there certain materials or plant types you’d recommend that hold up well over time without needing constant care?

Would really appreciate any lessons learned, budgeting tips, or things you wish you’d thought about before starting. Thanks!

Great question! Backyard projects can get complicated fast if the order isn’t planned well. From my experience, starting with grading and drainage is key if water collects near the house or low spots aren’t corrected first, anything you build or plant later can get damaged or require redoing. Hardscaping like patios or walkways usually comes next, followed by planting beds, trees, and shrubs. That way your plants aren’t disturbed by heavy equipment or changes in soil grade later on.

Another tip is to be realistic with long-term maintenance. Native plants or drought-resistant species often hold up better with less constant care, and choosing durable materials for paths and patios will save headaches over time.

Before locking in your plan, I’d recommend getting professional input through landscaping cost estimates services. They can provide a clearer picture of both materials and labor, helping you budget accurately and prioritize projects in the right order without surprises.

Planning ahead this way really pays off you avoid redo work and end up with a backyard that looks great for years.
