Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
It's wonderful to see lots of interest in beach volleyball and our club! Below are questions we're often asked.
Brighton Beach Volleyball Association (BBVA) is a membership-based community sports club run by volunteers. We're a member of Volleyball NSW.
Do I need to be a member to play?
Yes, for insurance reasons and because the equipment is owned and maintained by our club, you must be a member to play with us. Memberships are for 1 year (April to March) and we try to keep the cost affordable.
From time to time, BBVA runs social tournaments, such as our annual Volleython between Christmas and the New Year. Some of these tournaments are open to members and non-members alike.
How much does it cost to join BBVA?
For the April 2025-March 2026 season, our most common membership tier (recreational) costs $99 ($70 for U18s). This is for those who want to play socially and enter the occasional social tournament.
Recreational memberships gives access to our club, and use of the equipment, nets, balls and allows you to play in competitions at our club.
For those who wish to compete in State-run competitions, this requires a higher tier of membership. You can find more information on this page.
What if I'm not sure? Can I try before I buy?
If you’re an experienced beach volleyball player, you are welcome to let us know and then have a hit with our members on the weekend to see if BBVA is right for you.
If you haven’t played before or are unsure of your level, we recommend you book a beginner’s lesson with us. You can pay per lesson for 4 weeks before making a decision on whether to join our club.
When do games happen? How are they organised?
You will find BBVA members playing most weekends from early in the morning and into the afternoon. This is weather dependent, though we’ll often still be playing if there’s a breeze or light drizzle.
There are no set times for playing. Once you join the club, we’ll add you to the members WhatsApp group where members organise games. Occasionally during the warmer months there will be early morning or evening games on weekdays.
Players are responsible for setting up and packing down courts.
I'm new to volleyball. Can I still play?
Yes, we offer beginner classes on most weekends! Book here.
I played indoor volleyball in high school. Do I need to take lessons for beach volleyball?
Most players transition well from indoor to beach volleyball – however if it’s been several years since you last played, we recommend you book a lesson with us. See details above.
My child would like to play. Do you have classes for kids?
Yes, we have a high number of juniors at the club and offer a free introductory trial and beginner classes.
Can I book or rent the courts to play with friends?
While the courts and posts are owned by Bayside Council, BBVA uses the courts year round and all the equipment is the property of BBVA.
Unfortunately we don’t offer equipment hire.
